Why is the shop called Dany Music?

Story of about thirty years of passion

“Why Dany Music if your name is Dino?”

This is the question I have been asked many times over the years. “Is it perhaps a derivation of your name?”

No, it's simply the name of the son of the person who founded Dany Music.

It was November 1996 when a music lover named Francesco D'Attimo decided to open a record store in Castrovillari and name it after his son.

At the time the staff consisted of 4 people, each with their own task: the cashier was Francesco D'Attimo (known as compa Franco), the sales assistants for the catalogue and new products were his son Dany and Alessandro Cantatore (known as Papa Jo) and me,

Dino Provenzano (known as Mr Provenzano, at the time I was a DJ in a disco) was the sales person for 12 inches for DJs and for sportswear.

The shop was a huge success among enthusiasts in the area and the surrounding area, so much so that shortly thereafter, Francesco decided to open a new store in nearby Rossano.

Rossano was also a success, so Francesco dedicated himself entirely to his new shop, while Dany and I began our journey together, also because Alessandro had decided to change jobs.

The first two years of Dany & Dino's management were fabulous. I still remember the hundreds of titles that arrived in our store every week. In addition to proposing and selling our tastes and musical choices, the store had also become a meeting point where we could comment and meet.

But like all good things, this too, which until that moment had been fantastic, took the road to crisis.

It was just the beginning of the summer of 1999 when Napster, our first unfair competitor, came to light. We managed to contain the competition because at the time the internet was not as fast as today, so downloading a song took a long time, but things started to change around 2003 with the birth of iTunes. We understood that there was little we could do, the climb was starting to be felt on our legs, on our shoulders and above all in our heads.

We tried to contain costs, to specialize in other genres and propose other alternatives, but we soon realized that we were left alone with our records. By now the big chains had taken over our small market, making us unfair competition.

What to do?

One person in the shop was already a lot, two would have been too many.

Dany, who was the owner anyway, threw in the towel in 2009. Now I was really at a crossroads: risk some money I had saved and take over everything, or abandon the ship in free fall and goodnight to the musicians?

I took courage (also because I had no other alternative) and took over the whole thing.

Now only the name and the memories remain. Many times I ask myself: "Who made me do this?"

It was passion, the desire to take risks to live in the joy and magic of music.

On the threshold of 30 years of activity, I sometimes wonder if I have chosen well. As a Catholic I think only God can know, but one thing is certain...

I AM A LITTLE CRAZY
